  • Under new leadership since fall 2023, the Graduate College will launch its first strategic planning process in spring 2024. This process will be structured to reflect the College’s equity-centered approach to graduate education at UVM and result in a Strategic Plan that centers access, equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence. It is expected that the Graduate College will publish an Inclusive Excellence Action Plan (2024-29) concurrently with releasing its overall Strategic Plan by fall 2024. Background The Graduate College at the University of Vermont was formally established in 1952, though the first graduate degree had been awarded in 1807. Today, UVM offers 53 programs leading to a master's degree, 27 programs leading to the PhD and 4 professional doctorates, 12 academic programs leading to Certificates of Graduate Study, and a growing suite of micro-certificates. All graduate certificates and degrees are awarded through the Graduate College except for the M.D. degree, awarded through the Larner College of Medicine. The Graduate College includes programs and degrees in the life, physical, and mathematical sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, as well as professional training. One of the notable features of a UVM graduate education is that many of our programs are inter- or trans-disciplinary, thus capitalizing on the exceptional strengths of UVM faculty and their commitment to collaboration. The mission of the Graduate College is to sustain an inclusive and equity-centered environment for high-quality, student-centric graduate education by stimulating and supporting the intellectual and professional development of a diverse faculty and student body; by holistically supporting the wellbeing of all students; by promoting innovative forms of discipline-based and interdisciplinary scholarship, research, and curricula; and by recognizing scholarly excellence. Functional responsibilities of the Graduate College include: a. Graduate Education Policies b. Graduate faculty approval and support c. Graduate curriculum requirements, approval, assessment; Graduate Catalogue d. Graduate Student Enrollment Management – Recruitment, Admissions, Progression, Graduation e. Graduate Student Success– academic, financial, holistic student support f. Cross-college Interdisciplinary Programs housed in the Graduate College g. Overseeing Postdoctoral Affairs and Initiatives
